Many people say their lower back and ribs feel stiffer once the weather turns cooler. This note looks at a few ordinary reasons why that might be, and at what a slow shiatsu session at Pure Cloud Valley can and cannot do about it.
01 What cooler weather does to how we hold ourselves
When the air cools, many people hunch a little, pull their shoulders up and tense the muscles around the middle of the body to keep warm. Add a summer of long days at a desk and it is easy to see why the lower back and the ribs can feel stiffer. This is an everyday observation, not a diagnosis, and it differs a lot from person to person.
Shorter days also tend to mean less walking and more sitting. If your back feels different from one season to the next, the weather may be only part of the picture.
02 What a shiatsu session involves in the cooler months
Shiatsu at Pure Cloud Valley uses slow, sustained pressure with thumbs and palms, applied through clothing on a floor futon. If you tell us that your back and the area around the ribs are where you feel stiff, we can spend more of the session there. The pressure is held rather than pounding, and you can ask for it to be lighter or firmer at any point.
Some visitors like to end a 90-minute session with a few minutes of slow breathing while lying on their back. It is optional, and we only do it if you want to.
03 Afterwards, and when to see a doctor instead
People describe different things afterwards. Some feel calmer, some feel tired, some notice nothing in particular. None of these is a promise, and a single session is not a treatment for back pain. Drinking some water and keeping the rest of the day gentle is a sensible habit.
If you have back pain that is severe, is getting worse, or comes with numbness, fever or difficulty moving, please see a doctor rather than book a session. If you are curious about a first visit, the common questions before booking page explains how it works.
