Stillness as a practice, not a personality trait

Why sitting quietly is harder in a city and what a structured session can offer

By Pure Cloud Valley ·

Three people seated side by side with their eyes closed in a quiet room

Most people who come to the stillness sessions at Pure Cloud Valley say the same thing at the start: they are not good at sitting still. Our answer is usually that nobody is, particularly in a busy city, and that the session is not about being good at it. It is about doing it with some structure around you.

01 Why stillness is harder in a city

Big cities reward speed and responsiveness. Trains run on the second, shops stay open late, and the social expectation is to be reachable, productive and composed at all times. This is not a complaint about city life. It is an observation about what it costs.

The cost is that body and mind rarely get a genuine pause. Even rest tends to be mediated by a screen. Stillness, in the sense of sitting quietly without a task, has become unusual, and for many people the last time they did it was childhood.

02 What a structured stillness session offers

The stillness session at Pure Cloud Valley lasts 30 minutes. We give light guidance on posture at the start, usually a few adjustments to how you are sitting and where your hands rest. After that we guide attention to the breath and the weight of the body. We speak occasionally, but not constantly.

The structure is the point. Many people find it easier to be still when someone else is holding the container. The session is not silent, but it is quiet, and there is no music.

03 Who it is for

The stillness session is often a gentle first visit for people who are curious about the studio but not sure they want bodywork. It can also fit between longer sessions, or on weeks when a full shiatsu is not possible. As the shortest format we offer, it is the lowest-commitment way to visit, and fees are confirmed when you book.

If you want to see how it sits beside the other formats, the services page describes each one. The session is a quiet practice, not a therapy or a treatment for any condition.
